How to Prioritize Rooms When Painting Your Whole Chicago House
The timeline for painting a single room in your house can be as short as one or two days. When it comes to major interior painting jobs that involve multiple rooms, you may need to plan for the process to take as much as a couple of weeks. Since each room will be temporarily unavailable during at least a portion of that time, you’ll want to plan your painting project carefully.
In most cases, starting with the smallest rooms first is the best way to go. This frees up more rooms faster so that you have several places in your house that you can use during the rest of the painting project. You’ll also want to consider which rooms you use the most. Beginning with the most frequently used rooms gets them out of the way so that you experience fewer inconveniences during the end of the project. Our painting contractors typically recommend completing whole house projects in the following order.
Begin With the Bedroom
Your home’s bedroom serves as a personal sanctuary where you can go to relax at the end of the day. At Fine Painting, we like to start with the master bedroom first since this tends to give people the chance to instantly begin enjoying the results of their interior painting project.
Starting the paint job as early in the morning as possible means that your bedroom walls should be dry by the time that you are ready to go to sleep. Being able to avoid having to camp out in a different room allows you to enjoy a stress-free painting experience. Depending upon the scope of your project, we can then move on to the other bedrooms. Making sure that your kids have their normal place to sleep can also make your project go smoother.
We’ll finish any spare bedrooms that you have around the same time that we are doing the others, but you can let us know if you prefer to hold off on them until other major rooms in your house are done.
Prioritize a Home Office
Many people today spend more time in their home office than they do in their bedrooms. Depending upon your work responsibilities, you might also prefer to get this room done around the same time that you are getting the bedrooms painted. Keep in mind that you may be able to move to a different room in the house temporarily while you wait for the paint to dry.
You can also ask the contractors to consider painting the home office towards the middle or end of the day so that you can get your morning meetings out of the way first. Doing it this way gives the paint time to dry overnight when you are less likely to need to go in to your office space. By the time morning rolls around, you should be able to go back to work with practically no disruptions to your daily schedule.
Move On to the Bathrooms
Bathrooms are usually just as important as bedrooms, and you’ll want to always have at least one available to use during the interior painting project. Since many bathrooms are smaller, we can often do these at the same time as we are doing the bedrooms. If you have a preference for which bathroom you want done first, then let the painting contractor know. They’ll do their best to get it done so that your family can take care of their personal needs throughout the project.
Head to the Kitchen
In most Chicago IL homes, the kitchen serves as the heart of all of the family activities. Since the kitchen also tends to be bigger and more complicated to paint compared to other rooms, it is always a good idea to knock it out as soon as possible.
While we paint, you will need to plan how to cook and enjoy your meals even though your kitchen is temporarily unavailable. Some people choose to order out that day, or you can set up a temporary kitchen area by moving a microwave to a different room. This can give you a way to heat up meals, which makes life feel a little more normal while you wait for the kitchen walls to be finished.
Don’t Forget the Dining Room
If your home’s dining room is attached to the kitchen, then we’ll likely paint these two areas at the same time. Detached dining rooms might be able to wait until we paint the living room provided that you have a table to eat at in the kitchen. This is another one of those areas where you can provide some insight. Large families might not be able to wait too long to have a place to eat. Single people and smaller families might be able to get by with eating somewhere else for a day or two.
Go On to the Living Room
This is another one of those rooms that tends to be the largest when it comes to residential painting. Living rooms are often as busy as the kitchen, but most people can manage avoiding the room for a day or so when the other rooms are already painted. While you wait for your freshly painted living room, you can spend time in your bedrooms or admiring the beauty of your new colors on the kitchen walls.
Plan to Finish With the Laundry Room
This small room can usually wait until the final stages of your interior painting project since it tends to be hidden away from most of the other living spaces. We recommend doing all of your necessary laundry the day before the contractor arrives to begin painting. This frees up the room for a day, and you’ll be able to resume your normal laundry routine once the walls are completely dry. Although this plan tends to work for most homeowners, you might have different needs. Give our team a call to schedule a consultation that covers everything you need to know about your painting project. During this initial meeting, you can let the painting contractor know if you prefer to have certain rooms done first or last. Creating a customized schedule for your painting project helps you to sail through it with minimal impacts upon your daily routine.
